PM Surya Ghar subsidy: step-by-step for Indian homeowners
Last verified: 13 October 2026
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana gives households a central subsidy for grid-connected rooftop solar. The whole process, from application to money in your bank, runs online through the national portal.
Subsidy amounts for homes
- Rs. 30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW.
- Rs. 18,000 per kW for the third kW.
- Capped at Rs. 78,000 for systems of 3 kW or more.
Is the scheme still open?
As of our last check, yes. MNRE's guidelines set the implementation period until 31 March 2027. The subsidy is released only after your system is installed, inspected and the claim is made, so start well before the deadline. Reports of an extension are not official until notified.
Step by step
- 1. Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your state, electricity company, consumer number and mobile.
- 2. Apply for rooftop solar; the net metering agreement is part of the application.
- 3. Get approval from your electricity company (technical feasibility checks have been simplified).
- 4. Install with a vendor registered on the portal.
- 5. Submit plant details; your electricity company inspects and fits the net meter.
- 6. Submit bank details and request the subsidy. The government says it takes about 15 days on average once details are correct.
Loans
Collateral-free loans are available through banks under the scheme. Homeowners report vendors starting the loan request on the Jan Samarth portal, followed by a bank visit.
